Back Pain

Osteopaths are best known for their treatment of back pain (though we do also do heads, shoulders, knees and toes – seriously!)

So what causes back pain?

There isn’t a quick answer to this question.  Many problems, pathologies and injuries can cause your back pain.  These include:

  • Disc problems
  • Wear and tear
  • Fractures
  • Gynae problems
  • Kidney stones
  • Ulcers
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Spondylosis

Each one of these will probably require slightly different treatment.  And this is why we take such a long medical case history before we treat you.  It’s important for us to find out whether you need investigations: scans, blood tests, x-rays…

We won’t treat until we know it’s safe to do so.

Treatment for back pain might involve exercises, hands-on work, gentle manipulation, TENS, ultra sound or clicking.  It all depends on what’s wrong, how you injured yourself, your family history.  It also depends on how you’re put together and where the strain patterns are through your body.  We always check your head, shoulders, knees and toes when we’re examining you, just in case they’re stopping your back from recovering!
