Acupuncture and Fertility

When you’re trying to conceive, it can feel as though every month is a cycle of hope and disappointment. You may have already changed your diet, tracked ovulation apps religiously, or even started IVF. So where does acupuncture fit in?

How Can Acupuncture Support Fertility?

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body that influence blood flow, hormones, and the nervous system. For fertility, this can mean:

  • Improved blood circulation to the ovaries and uterus, creating a healthier environment for conception.
  • Balancing hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle.
  • Reducing stress and anxiety, which can interfere with ovulation and implantation.
  • Supporting IVF treatments, with some evidence showing higher success rates when combined with acupuncture.

The Science

A large review published in BMJ Open (2018) found that acupuncture may improve pregnancy rates in women undergoing fertility treatments, particularly when given around embryo transfer. While more research is needed, the evidence is encouraging.
