What is Frozen Shoulder?

At Ashgrove Clinic in Higham Ferrers, we specialize in effective frozen shoulder treatment to help you regain mobility and reduce pain.

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a painful and often misunderstood condition. At its most severe, it can cause constant discomfort and severely restrict the movement of the affected arm, sometimes limiting motion to just a few degrees.

The condition typically progresses through three distinct stages:
Freezing stage – pain gradually worsens and movement becomes limited.
Frozen stage – stiffness peaks, and shoulder use is greatly restricted.
Thawing stage – symptoms slowly improve, and range of motion gradually returns.

Without proper frozen shoulder treatment, this condition can last up to three years. Even then, many people are left with lingering pain or limited shoulder mobility.

In many cases, the exact cause remains unclear. However, frozen shoulder has been linked to underlying health conditions including diabetes, heart disease, and thyroid disorders.

TYPICAL SYMPTOMS

ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM ANY OF THESE?

Constant pain inside the shoulder joint.

Pain down the outside of the arm.

Severe sharp pain on certain movements.

Night pain.

Rapid stiffening and immobility of the shoulder.

Several members of our team have completed advanced training in frozen shoulder treatment. The technique we use was developed by one of the UK’s leading osteopaths and has delivered outstanding results.

A randomised placebo-controlled trial at Cambridge’s Addenbrookes Hospital demonstrated that this method led to significant pain reduction, along with noticeable improvements in shoulder strength and movement. The outcomes were superior when compared to both standard physiotherapy and placebo treatments.

The evidence strongly supports that our approach offers a more effective solution than many conventional frozen shoulder therapies.

Treating frozen shoulder is a gradual process. Most patients require between 8 and 12 appointments to fully restore normal shoulder function. However, we aim to significantly relieve your pain within the first 4 sessions.

In some cases, we may recommend further investigations, as other conditions can mimic the symptoms of frozen shoulder.

If you suspect you have frozen shoulder but aren’t sure, we offer a free consultation at Ashgrove Health Clinic. Our expert team will assess your condition and guide you on whether our frozen shoulder treatment is the right option for you.

Frozen Shoulder: Insights From an Expert Shoulder Surgeon

This informative clip from BBC Radio 4’s “Inside Health” features shoulder specialist Simon Lambert, consultant at the Problem Shoulder Unit, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, London.
Mr Lambert explains that the current preferred surgical option for frozen shoulder treatment is a minimally invasive keyhole procedure to release thickened tissue. However, he stresses that surgery is only suitable for a very select group of patients.
For most people, unless your arm mobility is severely restricted (for example, if you cannot point your forearm directly ahead), Mr Lambert strongly recommends physical therapy — or as we call it, frozen shoulder physiotherapy.

Jay Sheridan says:

“You’ll be astounded at how quickly the K Laser machine and ‘Neil Asher Technique’ work for shoulder injuries.”
