Part 4 in our sciatica series

When you’re in pain, it’s natural to want a quick fix. Sciatica can be intense, but the fastest and safest way to feel better is to treat both the symptoms and the cause.

When reading this post please bear in mind that we don’t know what your underlying cause is.  Once we’ve worked that out for you it will be easier to get you treated and out of pain.

With that in mind, here are five steps that could speed up your recovery:

1. Stay gently active
It’s tempting to lie still, but movement is usually more helpful. Gentle walking, wriggling around, stretches, or changing position frequently can help ease pressure on the nerve.

2. Apply heat or ice appropriately
Use ice in the early stages (especially if the pain is sharp and inflamed), and heat if the muscles around the spine or hips feel tight. We can guide you on where to put the ice as it will depend on what’s causing your pain.

3. Get hands-on treatment
Manual therapy from a physiotherapist or osteopath can:

  • Reduce inflammation and nerve irritation
  • Improve joint and muscle movement
  • Speed up healing by improving blood flow

4. Improve your movement patterns and alignment
Prolonged sitting, especially slouched on a sofa or in the car often makes sciatica worse. We can show you how to sit, stand, and move in ways that reduce strain on your spine.

5. Strengthen supporting muscles
Weak muscles and repetitive asymetric movements often contribute to recurrent sciatica. Once the pain settles, targeted strengthening reduces the risk of it returning.

We combine all of these strategies into a tailored plan designed to help you recover as quickly and completely as possible. We don’t just treat the symptoms; we help you stay pain-free long term.
