Living with Lymphoedema: Compression Garments, Self-Care, and Support
If you’re living with lymphoedema, you’ll know it’s a condition that benefits from regular care and a proactive approach. Alongside treatments like manual lymphatic drainage, compression garments and good home care play a vital role in controlling your symptoms and keeping you comfortable.
What are compression garments?
These are specially designed sleeves, stockings, or wraps that apply gentle, graduated pressure to help move fluid out of the affected limb. They support the tissues, prevent fluid from building up, and reduce the risk of complications such as skin thickening or infection.

It’s important to wear the correct type and fit – too tight and it may be uncomfortable; too loose and it won’t be effective. We can help advise you, or you may be referred to a lymphoedema clinic for fitting. Here are some home care tips that make a difference:
Skin care: Keep the skin clean and well-moisturised to reduce the risk of infection.
Movement: Gentle exercises, particularly ones that move the affected limb, help stimulate lymph flow.
Elevation Resting with the limb raised when possible can reduce heaviness and swelling.
Hydration: Drinking enough water supports your body’s natural drainage and healing.
Avoid tight clothing or jewellery around the swollen area.
