Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by lymph fluid accumulating in areas of the body.   The fluid builds up in the tissues instead of being excreted and results in unsightly swelling, usually in the arms or legs.

Lymphoedema may arise following surgery, radiotherapy, trauma, infection, or a hereditary malformation of the lymphatic vessels.  Common symptoms include:

Swelling in one or more limbs
Heaviness or tightness in the affected area
Aching or discomfort
Hard or thickened skin
Reduced mobility

If untreated, lymphoedema can progress and may increase the risk of skin infections such as cellulitis. However, with timely management, symptoms can be greatly reduced and the quality of your life significantly improved.

At The Ashgrove Clinic, we offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage – a specialised form of treatment that stimulates the flow of lymph and encourages the removal of excess fluids. MLD is not a traditional massage. It is a gentle, rhythmic technique applied with light pressure, following the natural pathways of the lymphatic system.

How we can help:

Reduce swelling and fluid retention
Improve tissue health and skin integrity
Enhance immune response and circulation
Support recovery after cancer treatment or surgery
Provide education and self-care strategies

Our approach is personalised, supportive, and evidence-informed. We take time to understand your health history, assess your needs, and build a care plan that fits your lifestyle.

After treatment you may feel lighter in the affected area.  You might also notice a reduction in swelling, and experience easier movement.

Many people report an overall sense of calm and well-being, similar to the sensation after meditation. Some also feel more energised or notice improved sleep quality. You might be advised to drink plenty of water afterwards to support the body’s natural detoxification.

Patients often describe Manual Lymphatic Drainage as deeply relaxing.

The therapist, Georgie McGahey, uses precise hand movements to stretch and release the skin, stimulating underlying lymph vessels without discomfort. There’s no deep tissue pressure – it’s light, soothing, and tailored to your individual needs.
