Secondary infertility

Many couples assume that if they conceived easily once, it will be the same the second time. But for some, trying for another child is unexpectedly difficult. This is called secondary infertility, and it’s more common than you might realise.

Why does it happen?

  • Age: Fertility naturally declines in your 30s and 40s. Egg quality and hormone levels can change, even in just a few years.

  • Lifestyle factors: The demands of looking after a toddler, stress, lack of sleep, irregular eating, can affect your cycle.

  • Health conditions: Issues such as endometriosis, PCOS, or thyroid problems may become more pronounced over time.

What can you do?

  • Track your cycle carefully. Even if it was predictable last time, your body may have changed. Use an app or chart to understand when you’re most fertile.

  • Support your body’s recovery. Eat a balanced diet, make time for exercise, and don’t underestimate the power of rest. Sometimes your body needs extra support after pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding.

  • Try acupuncture. Research published in BMJ Open (2018) reviewed studies on acupuncture and fertility, suggesting that treatment may improve pregnancy rates, especially when combined with IVF. Acupuncture also helps reduce stress and improve circulation, both important for fertility.

Support

We often meet women juggling family life while quietly worrying about why “it’s not happening this time.” Acupuncture provides not just physical support but also emotional breathing space. It can make you feel calmer, more balanced, and more in tune with your body.

Secondary infertility can feel lonely – friends may assume you’re “sorted” because you already have a child. But your feelings are valid, and support is available.
